STUDENT LIFE: ATHLETICS OVERVIEW
Staten Island Academy believes that team sports build character, encourage cooperation and a sense of fair play, and promote life-long fitness. Many of life’s most important lessons-the value of teamwork, winning and losing, following through on a commitment, respect for others-are introduced and reinforced on the playing fields and courts. Athletics is an important part of the Academy experience. Interscholastic teams are offered to students in grades 5-12. On average, 79% of Middle School students play on at least one team (50% play on two teams!). Our athletics facilities include the OJ Buck Gymnasium with locker rooms. A state-of-the-art Fitness Center is the latest addition to the Academy’s athletics facilities. Completed in the fall 2003, the center is used by all Grade 5-12 students for required fitness classes. Our athletic teams also use the center to develop strength, flexibility and aerobic capacity. The Academy’s 12-acre campus also has outdoor playing fields, tennis courts and two outdoor pools.
