NEWS & EVENTS: SIA IN THE NEWS STORY DETAILS Tsunami Victim Support Initiative January 3 , 2005 - We end our holiday this year in the shadow of the terrible tragedy that afflicted many tens of thousands of people in the Indian Ocean . It is a tragedy that will affect that area for years and years, and it impacts all of the rest of us as citizens of the world. Staten Island Academy will join the efforts of many people on Staten Island to help support the victims of the tsunamis. This afternoon, several of our seniors and Mrs. Caren Platis, who is the Chairperson of our History Department and the coordinator of our Students Organization for Service (SOS), will attend the Island-wide planning session at the Cargo Café in St. George to help coordinate Staten Island ’s tsunami victim support initiative. Staten Island Academy has volunteered to undertake administrative responsibilities for the tsunami support initiative, which will focus on an Island-wide collection day on January 13, 2005 . Students and teachers will be involved. It is my hope that all of us at Staten Island Academy will assume a leadership role in helping those who have suffered so terribly. We will keep you posted as the plans develop. Diane J.
