Staten Island Academy to Present Summer Opportunities Fair

January, 16, 2007 – Staten Island Academy is presenting a “Summer Opportunities Fair” on Tuesday, January 23 from 3:30-5:30 PM in the school’s Patrick Commons in Crowe Hall. The fair will feature approximately 20 representatives from programs for fun and study for students entering Grades 7 through 12 in September 2007. Additionally, literature from dozens of other programs will be available.

International living and travel experience programs that will be featured at the fair include Youth for Understanding, World Horizons International, Visions, Oxbridge Programs, Oxford Royale Academy, Glimpses of China and Experiment for International Living. Representatives from domestic study opportunities—including Syracuse and Columbia University and Amherst College’s Great Books program—will also be present at the fair.

“These programs can be an invaluable part of a student’s educational, social and personal development,” said Linda Coleman, Staten Island Academy’s Director of External Studies. “They allow students to develop self-confidence, self-reliance and problem-solving skills. Additionally, programs that involve immersion in a foreign culture enable our students to challenge preconceived notions about the world and develop appreciation for other value systems and ways of life. This heightened global awareness is increasingly important in today’s smaller and interconnected world.” Last summer, more than 30 Academy Upper School students expanded their educational horizons through summer programs.

Staten Island Academy also has two camp programs. The Summer Institute for the Gifted is an academic program for gifted and talented students entering Kindergarten through Grade 6. It is held on the Academy’s campus from July 9-27. An Open House that explains the program will be held on March 4 at 11 AM in the Academy’s Haugen Hall Auditorium, or you may call Eileen Corigliano, site director, at 718-303-7836 or e-mail ecorigliano@statenislandacademy. A recreational day camp program for 3-year-olds through Grade 8 is held at the Academy from June 18 through August 17. The camp features instructional and recreational swimming, sports, Discovery Science, computers and art. An Extended Day program from 7 AM -7 PM and flexible part-time schedules help parents meet their child-care needs. A Counselor in Training program is also available for students in Grades 9 through 12. Three Open Houses will be held in the spring from 11 AM-2 PM on March 3, April 15 and May 12. You may also call Darlene Crowe, camp director, at 718-303-7846 or e-mail dcrowe@statenislandacademy.org.

Staten Island Academy, located on a lush 12-acre campus, is a college-preparatory day school with an average class size of 17. The Academy is composed of seven buildings, including a gymnasium and fitness center, theater and state-of-the-art computer facilities. Outdoors are two swimming pools, athletic fields, a playground and tennis courts. For more information about Staten Island Academy and its outstanding programs, visit www.statenislandacademy.org .
