Staten Island Academy Students to Examine Problem of Global Warming January, 17, 2007 – On Friday, January 26, Staten Island Academy Upper School students will devote most of their school day to examining a real-world issue that impacts all life on earth: global warming. Students will first learn more about the topic through viewing the film An Inconvenient Truth, featuring former Vice President Al Gore, at 10 AM in the school’s Haugen Hall Auditorium. After a break for lunch, students will reconvene at 12:30 PM in small groups to discuss the key points of the movie. Donald Stearns, a professor in the Biological Sciences Department at Wagner College, will then make a presentation to students at 1:15 PM. Dr. Stearns teaches a course on the environment and has used An Inconvenient Truth in his teaching. Dr. Stearns’ visit is part of the Academy’s Visiting Professor Program with Wagner College, in which faculty from the institution visit selected Academy classes to discuss specialized topics. Students will then break into small groups at 2 PM to develop action plans based on the day’s film, discussion and Dr. Stearns’ presentation. They will present their plans to all Upper School students and faculty at 2:45 PM. Staten Island Academy, located at 715 Todt Hill Road, is a college-preparatory day school with an average class size of 17. The Academy is composed of seven buildings, including a gymnasium and fitness center, theater and state-of-the-art computer facilities.
