Gender Traps: How Marriage Problems Start in Kindergarten Acclaimed Parenting Expert to Speak at Staten Island Academy on February 7

January, 17, 2007 – On Wednesday, February 7, Staten Island Academy’s Parents’ League is sponsoring a presentation by John Badalament. Mr. Badalament’s topic is “Gender Traps: How Marriage Problems Start in Kindergarten.” The discussion will take place at 7 PM in the Academy’s Haugen Hall Auditorium, 715 Todt Hill Road. The event is free and open to the public.

Drawing on his consultancy with schools, scenes from his new documentary film Gender Traps and his private practice, Mr. Badalament will illustrate how the gender socialization of boys and girls is associated with friendship and relationship problems. Participants will examine their own assumptions about gender and relationships, see how gender stereotypes, if unchallenged, affect children’s relationships and school experience and learn practical skills useful in all relationships.

Mr. Badalament has a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His documentary film, All Men are Sons, aired nationally on PBS stations. In addition to lecturing internationally, he is currently writing a book about fatherhood. He will be available for interviews prior to and immediately following the presentation.
