Staten Island Academy Excellence in Education Awards

October 2005 -One of the most important – but undervalued – professions in America is teaching. In a borough as rapidly growing as Staten Island , it is particularly important to address this issue. We believe that Staten Island needs to take a leadership role in supporting education by honoring its teachers.

In partnership with the local business community and the Staten Island Advance, Staten Island Academy is establishing the EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARDS to pay public tribute to outstanding educators on Staten Island. The Academy's business partners are Leewood, Northfield Savings Bank, Richmond County Savings Foundation and Victory State Bank.

Honorees will be drawn from public, private, and parochial schools. They will also be faculty members at colleges and universities and instructors in cultural institutions. What they will all have in common is their impact upon our borough by guiding children and adults to higher levels of aspiration and achievement.

To mark the beginning of National Teacher Appreciation Week, on Sunday, May 7, 2006 , at 3:00 PM , the Academy will host the first annual EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARDS ceremony to honor five outstanding Staten Island educators chosen for their excellence as teachers, their accomplishments, and the effect they have had on the lives of students on Staten Island.

All award winners will receive an honorarium of $1500 that has been underwritten by members of Staten Island ’s business community who recognize that it is in everyone’s best interest to raise the bar for education on Staten Island . They know that educators open the minds and hearts of students and help them reach their potential.

The Staten Island Advance is working closely with the Academy on this endeavor because the newspaper shares our commitment to educational excellence. The paper is the award’s press sponsor providing advertising and editorial support.
