Staten Island Academy to Receive Eisenhower Distinguished School Award on October 27 Middle School Head Eileen Corigliano to Receive Distinguished Educator Award October 18, 2006 – Staten Island Academy and its Middle School Head, Eileen Corigliano, will be honored by the People to People Student Leader Programs on October 27 at 8:10 AM at the Academy. The People to People Eisenhower Distinguished School award honors top schools and its educators for their accomplishments in educating from a holistic perspective in developing students’ minds and character. Only 25 schools across the nation have been selected to receive this award in 2006. Staten Island Academy is named for its continuous commitment to the People to People mission. The People to People Eisenhower Distinguished Educator award will also be awarded to Ms. Corigliano at Staten Island Academy. This award honors top educators for their accomplishments in educating from a holistic perspective. Ms. Corigliano is named for her continuous commitment to the People to People Mission as well. President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded People to People in 1956 with the intent that its members would work to promote peace through understanding. People to People Student Leader Programs select top students for participation based on educator nominations. The programs seek motivated students with academic promise, leadership potential and a desire to serve their communities. Nominated students are invited to attend programs that allow them to pursue their interests in leadership or a desired career field and give them an edge in the college admissions process. The Academy typically nominates six or seven students each year to participate. Open to students currently enrolled in Grades 6 through 11, these 10-day summer programs enable students to prepare for the college admissions process by learning exactly what top colleges and universities are looking for in high school candidates. In addition, these summits help students develop the leadership skills they will need to excel in the college admissions process. These summer programs are held once a year on the campuses of four top U.S. universities: Georgetown University, George Washington University, Stanford University and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Staten Island Academy, located on a lush 12-acre campus, is a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 college-preparatory day school with an average class size of 17. The Academy is composed of seven buildings, including a gymnasium and fitness center, theater and state-of-the-art computer facilities. Outdoors are two swimming pools, athletic fields, a playground and tennis courts.
