Brian Laline, Editor of Staten Island Advance,
to Speak at Staten Island Academy’s Commencement

June 8, 2007 (Staten Island, NY) – Brian Laline, editor of the Staten Island Advance, will be the commencement speaker at Staten Island Academy’s 119 th Commencement Ceremony on Wednesday, June 13 at 10 AM.

Mr. Laline began working for the paper as a reporter in 1972. After serving in various capacities as copy editor and city editor, he assumed his current position in 1992. As editor, Mr. Laline has overall responsibility for news content in the newspaper, editorial policy and sets the tone for emphasis to be given to news stories seven days a week. He is responsible for newsroom personnel and acts as a liaison between the newspaper and the community.

“We asked Mr. Laline to speak at Commencement because he is deeply committed to education,” said Diane J. Hulse, head of school. “Additionally, his achievements inspire others to reach their full potential.”

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Mr. Laline is involved in several non-profit organizations. He is a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and on the Board of Directors of the Staten Island Botanical Garden and St. George Theatre’s Richmond Dance Ensemble. He is a member of the Board of Managers for the YMCA. Additionally, he has received many awards from local groups, including the Boy Scouts of America Staten Island Council, the Staten Island Zoological Society and the Staten Island Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Mr. Laline holds a bachelor’s degree in English from LaSalle University in Philadelphia; and received a master’s degree in education from Wagner College. He resides in Ocean Breeze with his wife, Carol, and their three children.

Staten Island Academy , located on a lush 12-acre campus, is a college-preparatory day school for Grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12 with an average class size of 17. The Academy is composed of seven buildings, including a gymnasium and fitness center, theater and state-of-the-art computer facilities.
