Eleven Staten Island Academy Students to Attend Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference Today

November 6, 2006 – Eleven Staten Island Academy Grade 12 students are attending the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference today. Seven live in Staten Island: Hansae C., Allison C., Chaya C., Sonam D., Nidhi K., Joanne S. and Alyssa T. Ariana A., Don S. and Caitlin Z. live in Bayonne; Allyson C. resides in Brooklyn. Catherine Crofoot, an English teacher who also serves as adviser for two student publications, is accompanying the students to the conference.

The students attending are involved in one of three Staten Island Academy student publications: TheQuill, the oldest continuously published student newspaper in the country; Images, a Kindergarten-Grade 12 literary magazine featuring a collection of creative writing by students; and Academia, the school’s yearbook.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association Fall Conference is taking place at Columbia University’s historic Morningside Heights campus in Manhattan. Sessions cover all aspects of student publishing. Topics include writing and editing; staff organization and motivation; design and layout; suggestions for special areas of coverage; and legal and ethical concerns for advisers and editors. Award-winning publications will be on display for inspection.

Additionally, officers of the Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers Association will consult with faculty advisers about specific concerns and problems regarding the publication of newspapers, magazines and yearbooks. Speakers from the Teachers & Writers Collaborative, as well as advisers from award-winning magazines, will discuss how to put together an attractive and well-edited student magazine.

“This conference presents our students with a unique opportunity to learn more about assembling publications and provides them with an occasion to network with their peers from other schools who are also involved in publishing,” said Ms. Crofoot.

Staten Island Academy, located on a lush 12-acre campus, is a college-preparatory day school with an average class size of 17. The Academy is composed of seven buildings, including a gymnasium and fitness center, theater and state-of-the-art computer facilities.
