Board of Trustees Appoints New Board President and Three New Trustees

May 11, 2004 -The Board of Trustees of Staten Island Academy is pleased to announce the appointment of John J. Fafian as President. Other newly appointed executive officers for the 2004-2005 Board of Trustees include Elissa Carpenter, Vice-President; Vincent J. Dugan (Academy class of 1983), Treasurer; and Dina Marie Filippini, Secretary. In addition, the board of the prominent college prep school named three new trustees: Suzanne Stirn Ainslie, Paul Dapolito III and Steven W. Pasko.

Fafian, who graduated from Staten Island Academy in 1983, is an experienced board member having previously served as its vice president and treasurer. Fafian is married to another Academy graduate, Deborah. His daughter Maria attends the school and younger daughter, Katherine, will enter Kindergarten at the Academy next fall.

“As an alumnus, I have an understanding of the school’s rich and storied history. As a parent, I value the exemplary education the Academy provides to the current student body,” said Fafian. “As board president, I look forward to working with Mrs. Hulse, the board, the faculty and administration, parents, alumni and the rest of the Academy community to make an outstanding school even better and our collective vision of the future a reality.”

After graduating from the Academy, Fafian attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in 1987. Since 2003, Fafian has been a member of the Strategic Sourcing unit at Arrow Electronics, Inc. Prior to that, he served as Vice President for Corporate Services at Credit Suisse First Boston LLC, and as vice president at Deutsche Bank where he had global responsibility for the firm’s software sourcing strategy.

Fafian is former president of the Staten Island Academy Alumni Association and the founding member of the Holy Rosary Sports Committee.

NEW TRUSTEES
The three new trustees to the Staten Island Academy Board of Trustees include:

Suzanne Stirn Ainslie
After graduating from the Academy in 1972, Suzanne Stirn Ainslie attended Princeton University (A.B. 1976) and Bank Street College of Education (M.S. 1983). She served as interim director of Friends of Alice Austen House, Inc. and director of The Abigal Adams Smith Museum. Ainslie also was the coordinator for the Chinese Scholar’s Garden Groundbreaking Ceremony at the Staten Island Botanical Garden in 1997, and she taught at the Brearley School in New York City.

Ainslie is active in community organizations including The Historic House Trust of New York City, Historic Richmond Town, the Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island, New York Junior League. She also served as an alumni representative on the Academy’s Strategic Planning Committee, and on various alumni committees at Princeton University. Ainslie lives in Staten Island with her husband, Paul, and daughter Charlotte, who attends the Academy.

Paul Dapolito III
Paul Dapolito III is the president of Dapco Brokerage, Ltd. He is a member of the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT) and the Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange. In addition to serving as Dapco’s principle officer, Dapolito has extensive committee experience including membership on numerous NYBOT committees such as membership, business conduct, adjudication, arbitration, operations and technology, floor, and executive floor. Since 1999, he has served as an elected member of the NYBOT’s Board of Governors and its Executive Committee. His volunteer service includes participation in the Commodity Exchange Center Children’s Fund (now known as Futures and Options for Kids), and as a little league and soccer coach. Dapolito’s two children, Paul and Ashley, attend Staten Island Academy. His wife, Joann, is the owner of High Society, a hair salon.

Steven W. Pasko
The third appointee, Steven W. Pasko, resides in Staten Island with his wife, Michelle, and son, Tyler, an Academy student. Pasko, a graduate of Rutgers University (B.A. 1970) and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (M.B.A. 1972), is the managing director of CDC IXIS Capital Markets North America Inc. He has also served as CEO of Venturehighway.com; managing director of investment banking at Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown; and as principle of investment banking at Benedetto, Gartland & Greene, Inc. His banking credentials include tenures at Mabon Securities, Kaufman Capital Enhancement Partners, Drexel Burnham Lambert, Inc., Salomon Brothers, Inc., Smith Barney, Harris Upham & Company, Inc., MGIC Investment Corp., and Prudential Insurance Company of America.

2004-2005 Board Members
In addition to the three new members and its executive officers, the 2004-2005 Board of Trustees includes Jahnbaz Almas, Caroline D. Harrison (Academy Class of 1982), Dr. David Herzog, Daniel L. Master, Jr. (Academy Class of 1971), Dr. Carolyn Raia, Dr. Hemalatha Rao, Henry J. Scroope, III, Dr. Alison Smith, Anthony Vasaturo, Kathleen Weingast, and Joseph A. Dezio, the outgoing president of the board.

The Academy community recently gathered for a dinner in honor of Dezio for his dedicated service as board president for seven years. During the dinner, Dezio welcomed new president Fafian. He said, “John Fafian has strong ties with the Academy. He has the vision to help shape the school’s future.”

Honorary Staten Island Academy trustees include Nancy Avis, Virginia T. Kearns (Academy Class of 1936), Dr. Albert L. Patrick, Francis H. Powers, and Vito Soranno. Ex-officio members include Sally Ling (Parents’ League president), Diane J. Hulse (Head of School), and William C. Heming Jr. (Academy Class of 1986 and alumni association president).

Staten Island Academy, founded in 1884, is an independent, co-ed college preparatory school educating children from Pre-Kindergarten through high school on a 12-acre campus located at 715 Todt Hill Road. The Academy is celebrating 120 years of educational excellence in 2004.
