NEWS & EVENTS: SIA IN THE NEWS STORY DETAILS
“We Remember” September 9, 2003 - September 11 will be a day of remembrance, unity and hope at Staten Island Academy as the entire school community gathers together for a special commemoration. As 10:00 o’clock approaches on Thursday, September 11, students and faculty from grades 1-12 will gather at various locations throughout the campus to await the sounding of a bell. As the bell softly rings, the groups will walk silently to the Cloisters Patio where they will form concentric circles around the American flag. Lower School students will form the innermost circle, immediately followed by Middle School students. The outer perimeter will be composed of Upper School students. Younger students will lead everyone in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and everyone will sing “America the Beautiful.” Faculty members Angela Carstensen and Valerie Richards will then sing “God Bless America.” Head of School Diane J. Hulse will briefly address the community and ask everyone to join hands in silent remembrance before the group begins proceeding toward the Overlook fence where Seniors will distribute red, white and blue ribbons to fellow students and teachers. The ribbons will be tied to the fence as symbols of remembrance and as a commitment to unity and hope. Students will then return to their regularly scheduled classes. “There is great healing power in gathering together as a community,” said Hulse. “We will share our sadness at the tragedy of September 11 and also share our hopes for peace and tolerance.” The Academy’s youngest students in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, will observe the day in their classrooms with various patriotic activities including learning the Pledge of Allegiance and working on arts and crafts projects. Staten Island Academy (1884) is an independent, co-ed college preparatory school educating children from pre-Kindergarten through high school on a 12-acre campus.
