A Day in the Life of an SIA Camper
So what will your kids do here everyday? It might be
easier to tell you what they won’t do! Our program is
designed to have something for everyone, from the most
athletic camper to the most creative camper. Just take a
look at some of what your child will have to look forward
to at Staten Island Academy Day Camp!
All of our campers get their hands dirty with original and fun art projects all summer long. They might sculpt, paint, draw or bring home a three-dimensional hanging monster. Hey, you never know!
Everybody gets up and moving for Dance. Take some
music and movement, throw in some gymnastics, add a
touch of funk and a ton of energy, and you get our
experienced dance instructors and campers at Dance! Of
course, the program culminates in the annual Camp Show!
The Camp Show will be held Friday August 12, 2011. Two
shows are scheduled, and more information is given out
during the summer. The Camp Show is always a camper –
and crowd – pleaser! Make plans to be there for the standing
ovations.
How do you make a rocket? What do turtles eat? Want to make your own ice cream? All campers get to experience and learn all this and more with our hands-on science program led by Mr. Clay Wollney.
In our air-conditioned, monitored computer lab, all our campers get to take a break from the heat and enjoy the use of our computers. If your child is not really familiar with a computer, don’t worry; we help our campers safely find their way through cyber space! Some of the software includes robotics and mechanical Lego building!
Staten Island Academy Day Camp is home to the only
Ga-Ga Pit on Staten Island! It takes coordination,
concentration and quick action to play this fast-paced,
Israeli-style dodge ball game that is a perfect fit for our
smallest and tallest campers!
Weekly Events
If you’ve had a camper at Staten Island Academy Camp, you’re probably very familiar with the terms “Super Soaker Day,” “Halloween in July” and “Color Wars”! If it’s your first time with us, get ready to hear about these events and so much more! See the Camp Calendar for full details.
Our older campers get a chance to take a break from the heat in our game room. A good old-fashioned ping-pong tournament has been known to pop up now and then. This year look out for foosball and air hockey to challenge our campers!
Tennis Courts, Gymnasium and Fields
How about some tennis, soccer, wiffle ball, football,
basketball, softball or kickball? Don’t forget European
Handball! Not sure what that is? Join us, and you’ll find
out! The Academy’s 12-acre campus is at the disposal of
all our campers for all this and more! Tournaments
between divisions have one group taking home “The Cup”!
Need we say more? If hot lunch isn’t for your child, we also have cold options like PB&J and cheese sandwiches. Fruit, drinks and salads are always available, too. A full menu will be available in April.
Supervised by an American Red Cross certified water safety instructor and a staff of certified lifeguards, all campers swim twice a day. Before entering the pool campers are swim-tested according to Red Cross guidelines and given a wrist band indicating their ability. During the AM instructional swim, our lifeguards work with campers to improve their skills in the water. In the afternoon, it’s back to the pool to cool off at recreational swim.
