Physical education is an integral part of the Academy curriculum.
Students are required to take PE class in every grade, and the Athletics Department designs a series of different units so that students are participating in everything from running and indoor soccer to swimming and working out in the Academy Fitness Center. Student-athletes who participate in team sports are exempt from PE classes beginning in Grade 10 and practice with their teams during the school day and after school.
The Lower School (Pre-K through Grade 4)
Lower School students take PE classes 4 times per cycle from Pre-K through Grade 4.
The Middle School (Grades 5-8)
In Grades 5-8, the curriculum includes: physical education, dance, health and wellness, fitness, swimming, and team sports. Each student’s program is individualized, in part, by the sport season in which they choose to participate (soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, swimming, or softball). Through integrated experiences and individualized programming, coursework emphasizes skill development, team effort, sportsmanship and a positive attitude. Health & Wellness is coordinated through the Advisory Program and is co-taught by the Guidance and PE departments.

The Upper School (Grades 9-12)
In the Upper School, four years of PE classes are required. In Grades 9-10, the curriculum also includes formal coursework in healthful living. Students with a strong desire to pursue athletics in college make that evident in the college admissions process and the College Guidance team works with them to find the college program that fits best. Sports recruiters visit the Academy campus each year to watch our Tigers play.
