Each year, hundreds of Staten Island and New York City-area students compete for the Staten Island Academy William Winter Scholarships, which include admission to the Academy and scholarship assistance.

What are the details?

  • The Program is open to students who will be entering Grade 6 or Grade 9 the following September.
  • New student applicants to Staten Island Academy are eligible to participate.
  • Awards are based on an examination, school transcripts, teacher recommendations, and a personal interview.
  • The awards are not based on financial need. They are scholarship awards and do not need to be repaid.
  • Last year, the Academy awarded four William Winter Scholarships, to two students entering Grade 6 and two students entering Grade 9.

Who was William Winter?
The William Winter Scholarships are named for William Winter (1836-1917). Known primarily as America’s top theater critic during his lifetime, Winter was also an historian, poet, essayist, as well as a Staten Island Academy parent and member of the Board of Trustees.
