What is an independent school?
An independent school is a not-for-profit educational institutional not governed by a religious, governmental or for-profit organization. Staten Island Academy is proud of its status as the only independent school on Staten Island and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools. When are admissions decisions made?
The Academy adheres to the notification dates set by the Independent School Admissions Association of Greater New York. It is strongly recommended that applications for the 2012-2013 school year be submitted by January 20, 2012.

Is the Academy accredited?
Absolutely. The New York State Association of Independent Schools and the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges accredit Staten Island Academy. It is chartered and registered by the Board of Regents, State of New York.

Is it true that only children from wealthy families attend Staten Island Academy? Is it an elitist place?
No. Academy students come from every walk of life and every neighborhood on Staten Island. They also come from Brooklyn, New Jersey, and Manhattan. The school is dedicated to making its outstanding educational program available to everyone regardless of financial resources. The school has a comprehensive financial aid program,and over 1/3 of all students last year received a financial aid award.

Does the Academy have a rigorous academic program?
Staten Island Academy is a college preparatory school and our programs from Lower School (Pre-K through Grade 4) through Upper School (Grades 9-12) provide an academically challenging curriculum with a strong foundation in basic skills with enriched programs in the arts and athletics. Last year 64% of Grade 11 and Grade 12 students were enrolled in one or more Advanced Placement courses. Academy students are regularly recognized as AP Scholars and commended by the National Merit Scholarship Program.
