LOWER SCHOOL

The Differenceline

We know that the Academy is different, and we’re thrilled that you’re exploring that difference. The table below illustrates some of the powerful differences in the day-to-day and year-to-year learning experience.

  • Since we are exempt from State and City testing mandates, we can create a rich inquiry-based curriculum that focuses on deep and lasting learning.
  • We constantly review current research so we might better serve our children and facilitate their learning. Our faculty attends conferences and reads professional literature in study groups.
  • Our approach makes sure that learning “sticks.” We create explorations that delve into concepts, rather than relying on rote instruction.
  • Our instructional approach integrates all content areas. Art, dance, technology, music and physical education are all embedded in content study.
  • Children in the Lower School develop confidence and independence within a secure 12-acre wooded campus. The children are not confined to indoor classrooms, but experience nature as an alternative classroom.
  • Lower School children are a part of a school community of over 300 students from Pre-K through Grade 12. They get to see who they may become and interact with role models on campus every day. At the completion of the Upper School, students graduate with their Kindergarten teachers looking on.
