LOWER SCHOOL
Pre-Kindergarten (age 4) through Grade 4 In the Lower School, we structure each day around the needs of children’s changing minds and bodies. You will find teachers and students working on engaging thematic projects — from creating a large-scale building project with blocks in Pre-Kindergarten to writing a class constitution in Grade 4. Children learn to love reading and writing by reading literature rather than textbooks and by writing every day. Math and science are hands-on. We believe that art and music are essential to each child’s development, and you will find a rich integration of art, music and drama across the Lower School curriculum. Children feel safe to explore, learn and become part of our community. Academy families tell us how much they value our warm, close-knit community and the attention we give each child both inside and outside the classroom. Each of our teachers has tremendous concern for each child. They know not just the academic side of a child, but the whole child — a pet’s name, what kind of food a child likes for lunch, what makes a child sad and what makes a child happy. We never tire of seeing the children begin to put together all the skills they’ve learned in the first few years of school. The growth at this age is remarkable. It’s so exciting to see them begin to express their ideas in so many different ways. They are only seven or eight or nine years old and already they are historians and writers and scientists and mathematicians. Download Lower School Curriculum Guide (.pdf 57kb) |
