ACADEMIC
OVERVIEW
Staten Island Academy is a college preparatory school offering
a rigorous academic program with age-appropriate curriculum and programs.
Lower School: Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and
Grades 1-4 The skills learned in Lower School build a solid educational
foundation. In Pre-K and Kindergarten, students learn to share and work
together while learning pre-reading and writing skills. They also study
with specialists in computer, music, library, physical education and Discovery
Science. Grades 1-4 are self-contained classrooms where students study
reading, writing, mathematics, and social studies. Specialists teach computer,
music, drama, art, library, physical education and wellness, and Discovery
Science.
Middle School: Grades 5-8
During the Middle School years, students take on added responsibilities
in a supportive environment. Skills are expanded upon and critical thinking
skills are emphasized. Computer, english, history, languages, mathematics,
physical education and wellness, science with labs, and visual and performing
arts classes are taught by specialists in preparation for the transition
to Upper School. Students in grade 8 with strong mathematical abilities
can begin study in the Math Power Track program.
Upper School: Grades 9-12
Upper School classes are intense and challenging in preparation for college.
In addition to required courses, Upper School students can take an array
of Advanced Placement, Honors, independent study and elective courses.
Power Tracks in math and science, allow highly motivated strong students
to take advanced courses that give them a solid foundation for college-level
courses. Beginning in Grade 9, students begin working with the College
Guidance Department on the college admissions process. The Academy has
a 1:8 college advisor to student ratie. Read
