  Did you know that 27 languages are spoken in the homes of our Academy families? English, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Arabic, Portugese, Maloyalam, Hindi, Tie, Russian, Creole, Urdu, Turkish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Bengali, Polish, Punjabi, Korean, Hebrew, Mandarian, Cantonese, Tagalog, Farsi, Albanian, and German.

Diversity Initiatives

Following is a list of diversity initiatives launched at Staten Island Academy:

  • A Diversity Mission Statement was written.
  • The Diversity Action Committee was formed. Composed of faculty from all divisions, the Diversity Action Committee meets monthly to discuss and plan both formal and informal curricular initiatives.
  • Professional Development Day, November 2008, was dedicated to Diversity Visions. A consulting group worked with faculty and staff on multicultural awareness.
  • Professional Development Day, February 2009, was sponsored by the Diversity Action Committee, which created and taught workshops for faculty on a variety of diversity issues.
  • Members of the Diversity Action Committee attended many diversity workshops throughout the year including NAME (National Association of Multi-Cultural Education), People of Color, NYSAIS Diversity Conference, Undoing Racism.
  • The school completed the NAIS Demographic Survey.
  • The faculty developed a new course in the English Department called "Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice." The Department reviewed literature in its curriculum through the lens of diversity.
  • A partnership was developed with Wagner College for student mentoring/multicultural training. Plans are underway for Wagner College students to partner with Academy Upper School students, who will in turn become student leaders working with our own community.
  • The Academy held the "Celebration of Light" festivities in December.
  • Members of the five Upper School Houses spearheaded research about Christmas, Chanukah, Chinese New Year, Kwanza, Eid, and Diwali and decorated the main student dining hall for the winter holidays.
  • Upper School Student Awareness Day, instituted in January 2009, features film, forum, and discussion. In addition, lunch meetings for students of color were held.
  • The school attended the first Youth Unity Summit on Staten Island with students and faculty representatives.
  • The Academy engaged a multicultural speaker for students and the Parents' League.
