Mrs. Diane J. Hulse began her tenure as Staten Island Academy’s Head of School in 2002. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Hulse received her undergraduate degree from Beloit College and her M.A. from New York University. Staten Island Academy is the third independent school that Ms. Hulse has headed. Mrs. Hulse was the Head of the Middle School at Collegiate School from 1992-2002 and has been involved in New York City metropolitan area independent schools for thirty-six years, twenty-seven of which have been as a school principal. She has held numerous school leadership positions including college counselor, admissions director, and special program director. Mrs. Hulse is the treasurer of the Guild of Independent Schools of New York City and is a member of the Board of Directors of NYSAIS, the New York State Association of Independent Schools. Mrs. Hulse was elected to membership in the Country Day School Headmasters Association, the Head Mistresses Association of the East, and the National Association of Principals of Schools for Girls. From 1993 until 2011, Mrs. Hulse was a Commissioner for Accreditation for the New York State Association of Independent Schools, and she is active in chairing school accreditation teams. Mrs. Hulse was a member of the Board of Trustees of Boys’ Schools: An International Coalition and the Committee on School and College Relations of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Mrs. Hulse has served on numerous professional panels throughout her career and participated in many leadership institutes, including Stanford University’s “Leadership for Women,” and Harvard University Principals Center’s, “Leadership, an Evolving Vision.” She has served as a consultant to many other schools. Mrs. Hulse has written and spoken widely and been interviewed frequently on many topics. Speaking engagements have included: The American Psychological Association, Columbia University, The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), Barnard College, the New York State Association of College Admission Counselors, and the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation. Reference to her work has been made in such publications as The Christian Science Monitor, Education Week, and Dr. William Pollack’s book, Real Boys. Her writing has recently appeared in The Parents League of New York Review and The Head’s Letter. In the fall of 2000, Mrs. Hulse was the only American invited to participate in the accreditation of Upper Canada College, a renowned independent school in Toronto. In 2011, she was a fellow at the Klingenstein Head’s Program at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Mrs. Hulse is also very active in the civic life of Staten Island, where she resided from 1972 until 2007. She served on the Board of Snug Harbor Cultural Center from 2003 to 2008, and she was a member of the Steering Committee of “A Vision for Staten Island,” a community initiative to bring together citizens and public and private leaders throughout the borough to create an inclusive and comprehensive vision for the Island’s future. She has been a member of the Board of Directors of Project Hospitality since 2008. Ms. Hulse’s abiding educational interests include the impact of children’s gender – both boys and girls – on their success in school, school change and leadership. |
